Medical Tests

Examine the many tests used to diagnose VTE.

If your healthcare professional suspects VTE, you may have the following tests:

Pulmonary Embolism or PE

  • D-dimer blood test will show if you have a blood clot. If you have a clot, more testing will help find the cause.
  • CT-Angiogram, or CT Scan, of your chest is the most common way to identify blood clots in the lung.

Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT

  • D-dimer blood test will show if you have a blood clot. If you have a clot, more testing will help find the cause.
  • An ultrasound or venous Doppler test is often the first test used to diagnose a DVT. It uses sound waves to send pictures of your veins to a screen. These pictures show how well the blood is flowing in your veins and whether a clot is present.
Ultrassound

If a blood clot is found, your healthcare professional will talk to you about treating it with medicines or procedures.
